FAQs
What Families Want to Know About Short-Term Care
Short term care at St. Margaret’s usually lasts anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on your medical needs and recovery goals. Our Back to Home Program is designed to make short-term care as efficient as possible — our skilled nursing and therapy teams set benchmarks early so you always know where you stand in your recovery. Many short-term care residents return home within 15 to 30 days.
Yes — Medicare coverage for short-term care in certified skilled nursing facilities is available for up to 100 days following a qualifying hospital stay of at least three consecutive nights. Medicare covers 100% of approved costs for the first 20 days, and a daily copay applies from days 21 through 100. Our admissions team will review your medical records and help determine your Medicare coverage eligibility before admission. Long term care insurance and private pay are also accepted.
A nursing home provides both short-term and long term care, and St. Margaret’s does both. A dedicated nursing home focuses primarily on long term residential care for seniors who need ongoing medical support, while our short-term care floor is specifically designed around rehabilitation and recovery — with the explicit goal of returning residents home. Think of our short-term care program as a nursing home with a finish line: every service, from skilled nursing to therapy, is aimed at getting you safely back to where you want to be.

Yes. Our dedicated fourth-floor short-term care neighborhood includes 14 private rooms out of 18 total beds — among the highest ratio of private rooms in short-term care facilities in New Orleans. Private rooms are available on a private pay basis; semi-private rooms may be covered by Medicare or your health insurance. All short-term care residents, regardless of room type, enjoy the same access to our therapy gym, outdoor spaces, and all scheduled activities.
